International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking
“Share Facts On Drugs Save Lives”
The Department of Psychology, Pachhunga University College, in collaboration with Social Welfare & Tribal Affairs (MSD & RB), Govt. of Mizoram organized a Sensitization Programme for Undergraduate Students on Drug Prevention to raise awareness of the major problem that illicit drugs represent to society. 236 have registered for the event. A welcoming speech was given by Prof. Rinpari Ralte, Head of Department, Psychology. The honourable Chief Guest Mrs Sangchhin Chinzah, Secretary Social Welfare Department, addresses the event; she acknowledged the organizers for their effort to carry out this program. She emphasized on the need of drug prevention programs among young adolescents and adults, as educating an individual on how to “Say NO to Drugs” is the Need of the hour. She encouraged the participants to stand in solidarity against drugs and to take responsibility to work along the government, Churches, NGOs in achieving a drug free society. Ms. Vanlalhruaii facilitated the program.
The theme of this year, “Share Facts On Drugs, Save Lives” aims at combating misinformation and promotes sharing the facts on drugs — from health risks and solutions to tackle the world drug problem, to evidence-based prevention, treatment, and care. The first, Resource Person, Dr. Chawnglungmuana, C.E.O SHALOM, gave an educational presentation on different classes of drugs/substances based on Legality, mode of action, drug use comorbidity, predisposing factors for SUD, views on substance abuse as sin vs. disease. He also emphasized the Gateway drugs which are often ignored but are harmful and can lead to addiction.
The second Resource Person, Mr. Lalduhawma, President M.D.U.F shared his experience and the necessity of ending discrimination and stigmatization against substance abusers to make drug free society. He highlighted the importance of support from family and friends, and society as he found it to be one of the most important sources in his journey to sobriety.
The third Resource Person, Asst. Prof. Dr.Lalremruati Pachuau, GAWC, gave a presentation on Life Skills. She discussed the importance of cultivating listening skills, problem-solving strategies, and decision-making skills, and identifying our strengths and weaknesses. She also highlighted managing stress and time management. The speaker emphasized having positive Interpersonal Relationships, not only with romantic partners but with friends and family; she concluded her presentation by sharing a rating scale of relationship with the participants.
Asst. Prof. Dr. Lalropuii Pachuau, Dept. of Psychology, delivered a Vote of thanks and concluding remarks upon closing the event.
