Pachhunga University College (PUC) Village Adoption and Outreach Committee selected Sailam village as ‘PUC Adopted Village’ for the year 2024 -2026. The inaugural ceremony for this adoption was held on November 7, 2024, at the village's Zoluti Inpui. Dr. Vanlalthlana, from Higher & Technical Education, attended as the chief guest. PUC started its village adoption programme in 2012, funded through contributions from the college's faculty members. Under this initiative, various academic departments of the college study the village from different perspectives and provide some small assistances to the village. Arrangements for study opportunities at PUC for promising students, exposure visits to education-related centres for both students and older residents, are among the positive interventions the college has made in the adopted villages. Sailam, located in the Aibawk RD Block of Aizawl District, is home to 179 households. The village is well known for its bird sanctuary and its historical significance as the home of the renowned Mizo figure Bengkhuaia, whose raid on Alexandrapur Tea Estates and capture of a British girl, Mary Winchester (Zoluti), triggered the Lushai Expedition of 1871-72. Sailam is the fifth village to be adopted by PUC; previously, Phulpui, Lungleng I, Dulte, and Khawrihnim were also adopted.
