The Department of Psychology, Pachhunga University College organised a special webinar on the 10th September 2020, i.e. the World Suicide Prevention Day with the theme Working Together to Prevent Suicide to raise awareness about suicide and ways to prevent suicide prevention activities. This event was hosted by Dr. Rinpari Ralte, the Head of the Department of Psychology, Pachhunga University College and the speaker of this event was Professor Zokaitluangi, the Head of the Department of Clinical Psychology, Mizoram University. The Chairperson of this event was Madam Lalthantluangi Sailo, Assistant Professor, Department of Psychology, Pachhunga University College and 321 people registered for this special webinar.
As it is necessary to inform the public that a person dies every 40 seconds by suicide and up to 25 times as many again make a suicide attempt, the speaker of this event first addressed the key theories and risk factors for suicide – from the personal factors to the socio-demographic factors. From her addressal, it became clear that the prevention of suicide is a responsibility tasked not only to professionals, but to each and every person at the individual level. No doubt, to prevent suicide is a universal challenge. But together we can make a change if only we are willing to hear and if we are alert to the cries for help and if we patiently hear out and attend to the words of not only those deemed needing clinical attention but to our friends and family members.
The program was ended by a concluding remark from the organising secretary, Dr. Lalropuii, Assistant Professor, Department of Psychology, Pachhunga University College who gave a vote of thanks and who graciously ended the session by summing up the key themes of the event. Also, participation certificates were handed out to the attendees at the end of the event.
