Cleanliness, Beautification and Solid Waste Management Committee, PUC
Activity Report for Jan – May 2022
Beautification Report
The hedges and pine plants on the front lawn of the office building are regularly trimmed and shaped with hedge shears and trimming scissors by the cleaners of the college supervised by the security officer as per the committee’s resolution. Flowering plants and other small trees planted just outside the fence of the office building too are regularly trimmed to keep them in shape. Weeding is also done from time to time to maintain the beauty of the lawn.
The committee members after surveying the front lawn of the office building, the flowers planted in nursery pots last November 2021, and the surrounding area of the college fountain on 27th April 2022 decided to clear the existing perennial plants and foliage because they were dying and had wilted. The members decided to replace them and obtain new annual flower plants and seedlings.
Marigold flower plants have been planted on the flower beds of the front lawn of the main office building which are blooming nicely adding beauty to the surrounding area. Zamzo flowers (celosia) and Salvia flowers too are planted in nursery pots which will be placed around the campus fountain area, These flowers too have started to shed their bright beautiful colours.
Euphorbia Milii (crown of thorns) flower plant-lings have been planted on the flower beds around the fountain, they are adjusting well, thriving and will bloom soon. The flower beds are prepared with cow manure and vermicompost produced in the vermicomposting plant of the college. Potting soil is also prepared with the help of hired workers under the supervision of the Committee members.
Cleanliness Report
Each Department’s final year students have a daily sweeping roster, where students take turns in sweeping the classroom and corridors and mopping the floors as well. Every week on Friday students have co-curricular activities where normally cleanliness drive is conducted and students of every department participate in cleaning classrooms, windows, corridors, toilets and mopping the floors under the supervision of the department faculty in charge. With the Pandemic SOP, a cleanliness drive involving all the students is not possible at present.
However, campus cleanliness and clearing of debris (dead leaves) are done regularly in the morning and evening by sweepers and cleaners of the college as per instruction of the Committee members under the supervision of the security officer who is a member of the committee. The sweepers are individually assigned area and academic blocks to clean and sweep. The main gate day and night guards on duty take turn sweeping the campus area following a ‘duty roster’ prepared by the supervisor.
Solid Waste Management Report
The dead leaves collected through sweeping the campus area are segregated and put in garbage bags and disposed off to the vermicomposting plant of the college.
An MOU was signed on 8th April 2022 between the college and K-N-O-W WASTE/Recykal, a registered society of Mission Vengthlang, Aizawl functioning under Rapidue Technologies Pvt Ltd, recycling factories located in different parts of India to recycle dry wastes, fully compliant with the environment (Protection) Act, 1986 and Municipal solid Wastes (Management and Handling) Rules, 2000. The college agrees to give away the paper waste, E-waste and plastic waste for recycling as per the agreement.
The K-N-O-W WASTE/Recykal as per the MOU collects the segregated dry waste twice a week and information is passed on through telephonic communication when the garbage accumulated is ready to be picked up. The college appointed the security officer as the representative to coordinate the activities in the MOU, and is responsible for weighing the amount of the segregated wastes before informing K-N-O-W WASTE/Recykal to pick up the dry wastes, who pay the college for the weighted number of wastes.
In pursuance of this agreement, the college has prepared three collection centres/ locations for the dry wastes of the college. The first garbage pit is located near the security officer’s quarters just a few yards away from the college’s main gate meant for the wastes of the administrative building, Arts academic blocks and canteen I. The second garbage pit is located near the science stream canteen for the lower science academic blocks and library. The third pit is near the hostels and family quarters where garbage is collected from these areas.
The college is a plastic-free campus and strictly maintains awareness which is carried out through WhatsApp messages and notifications, posters, and placards are put up in prominent locations which are all executed by the committee. Plastic wastes from the dustbins are collected by cleaners regularly and put in garbage bags to be transported.
The degradable wastes are dumped in the decomposition pits meant for the purpose.
