The college offered Economics subject at the very beginning of the establishment of the college in 1958. At present the faculty consists of 4 Associate Professors and 1 Assistant Professor. The academic condition in terms of quality of faculty and learning transfer process is healthy and adequate. Most of the teachers are highly experienced academicians.
Students are admitted strictly on merit basis. Students largely come from rural background, from low and middle income group. Students are mostly proficient in regional language. They also have workable knowledge of English. The subject is preferred equally by both the genders and the number of girls increasing.
The Department have:
- Adequate number of faculty, all competent. Most of them with long experience of teaching. Two teachers has obtained Ph.D., three has NET
- Teachers often attended academic seminars and workshops.
- Most of the students admitted in the 1st year honours passed XII exams in 2nd division, including a few 1st division in 2009. Generally majority of them come from poor backgrounds, and language proficiency is a problem.
- The pass percentage was 60% and 70% in 2008 and 2009, respectively.
- Dropout rates during these years were 40% and 30%, respectively.
- Almost all students pursue post graduate course after completion.
- Departmental seminars are being organized at least once every year. For this II and III year students are divided into different groups. Each group consisting of 4-8 students have their own project works on various topics which are relevant to their studies.
- In view of the proposed semester system to be introduced in 2011, major improvements are being planned such as project work with weightage in the examination.
