A pioneer and pathfinder for the Mizo people, Rev Alwyn Roberts MA(Cantab), LLB has departed unto the loving arms of The Almighty. Volunteering as a missionary, he set out from Wales to oversee the first college in Mizoram – Aijal College (now named Pachhunga University College). He was the first established principal of the college. Besides hailing from a renowned institution, he was a learned intellectual with zealous passion. During his tenure, the College saw a great deal of progress and development – it was promoted to an ‘Added College’ and then later, was provincialised by the Assam Government. Also, at this time, the District Council proffered a vast tract of land for the college grounds, which is now the current college campus. Furthermore, Pu Pachhunga’s family donated Rs 50000 to the college. He served as the principal of Pachhunga University College from January 1961 to September 1967. While higher education began to thrive, it was imperative for him to leave the state of Mizoram due to the tumultuous insurgency – ‘rambuai’.
Another interesting factoid about Rev Alwyn Roberts is that he provided comfort and solace to the panicked and petrified people on the onset of the insurgency. His efforts and contributions when Mizoram was going through its darkest times was commended and expelled by his peers and those who have heard of him.
As Pachhunga University College is vehemently preparing for its Diamond Jubilee, we deeply regret that he is unable to fulfil our invitation to deliver a written speech due to his untimely demise. It is indeed a great loss for the Mizos that we have lost the pioneer of education and its progress in Mizoram.
We profoundly grieve a forebearer who is responsible for Pachhunga University College to reach its present prestige, Rev Alwyn Roberts and offer our condolences to the family he left behind.
