Pachhunga University College (then Pachhunga Memorial College) was established in 1958 as a private College Logic happened to be the courses of Under-Graduate studies. The Department of Philosophy remains one paper- two teacher’s department till 1975. When the honours course was started in 1976, one more teacher named Mr. N. Parthasarathy joined the Department. The present Head of the Department was among the first batch of Philosophy honours. It is sad to say that till today Philosophy subject is not yet introduced at the school level in Mizoram. However, recently Post-Graduate in Philosophy has been introduced in Pachhunga University College from 1st June 2018.

The Department organised two National Seminars and one International Workshop:

  1. National Seminar:

The first National Seminar was on “Social Justice, Development and Secularism: Philosophical Reflection on Contemporary National and North East Scenario”. Sponsored by the ICPR. The seminar was held on 29th and 30th November 2012. The proceeding of the seminar has been accepted by the Cambridge Scholars Publishing for publication.

The second National Seminar sponsored by the UGC was organised in collaboration with the English Department of the PUC. It was held on the 23rd and 24th may 2013. The topic of the Seminar was “Globalization and Ethnic Identity”.

  1. International Workshop:

The Department also organised International Workshop on “One Day International Workshop on Multiculturalism”, 28th September 2017. Sponsored by Pachhunga University College.

The department is responsible for framing the philosophy Under Graduate Syllabus (2011) and revised in 2015; and is also responsible for framing the Philosophy Post-Graduate Syllabus 2018.

The Department of Philosophy took active part in studying the issues relating the social, economic, political, Cultural and Environmental and to identify the potential of the village and to locate opportunities for further development when Pachhunga University College adopted Phulpui village and Lungleng village.

The student intake capacity of the Philosophy Department was 10 in 2005 which was increased gradually to 15, then to 20, and finally to 40. The students of Philosophy have no background in Philosophy as the subject is not available in the school level. Even though most of the students in the Philosophy Department are those who do not get admission in other departments. In spite of this, the passed-out students managed to get seats in various prestigious Universities like Delhi, Hyderabad, Madras, NEHU, JNU, Law College, Theological College etc. for further studies and continue to excel in their studies. Some of the students joined coaching institutions for various competitive exams. Those who did not go for further studies joined opportunities under government sector or find themselves self-employed. There were also a few students who joined professional courses before completing their studies.

The department thrives on the full support of the Principal, Vice Principal (past and present), colleagues of other departments and the non-teaching staff. They always give the department their unfailing support and render their services whenever needed.

It is a great step forward to have a Post-Graduate Course in Philosophy. However, it has a long way to go to keep pace with the other more established and bigger departments and the scope for this development is vast.
